The Calumet Project’s view on the Tar Sands issue engenders many concerns which include: the destructive mining process of the environmental wilderness; the increase of air and water contamination to the public’s health; safe working conditions for the refinery employees; and the green house gas emissions released from the refinery process.
We feel that this makes the strongest statement regarding all of the environmental problems that we have in this area. We are told too many times that we have to sacrifice these to have good jobs in the area. The Calumet Project feels that we can have all three: Clean Air, Clean Water, and Good Jobs
We do not need to sacrifice our natural resources nor destroy the natural assets that have continued to exist for scores of years. The proposed process is destructive to our natural environment, very costly to manufacturing, and it extrapolates more, from the environment, than it gives back.
